In the 15th centyry, Livorno grew from being a small fishing village in the republic of Pisa into a thriving port city. The pure white beaches in yhe surroundings and the various tourist attractions, such as the cathedral, Sanctuary of Montenero, the many museums and the 'Venezia Nuova' district, where the numerous canals bring to mind the city of Venice, have turned the city into a popular destination.
The perfect way to end your day here is to visit one of the charming little restaurants, in which you absolutely have to try the 'cacciucco', a delightful fish soup with tomatoes, before lingering at the table over a 'ponce' (coffee with rum). Once you arrive on the Motorail, you can cross by ferry to the islands of Corsica or Sardinia, or continue your journey to Tuscany.
